3) Can I take Berry Wise™ products more than once a day?

Absolutely, you may enjoy Berry Wise™ supplements multiple times a day in different forms. However, we strongly believe in the value of whole, colorful foods which is why we designed daily supplements – not meal replacements – meant to augment a varied diet. Our Antioxidant and Fiber & Antioxidant formulas contain added vitamins and minerals so be sure to balance any other supplements and food choices.

4) How do antioxidants protect us from oxidative damage or “oxidative stress”?

Oxidative stress refers to cell damage resulting from excessive free radical activity. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules produced by normal metabolic processes as well as environmental toxins including tobacco, radiation, excessive sunlight, air pollution and various chemicals. Left alone, free radicals can disrupt molecular structure and cause cell damage resulting in numerous degenerative diseases and accelerated aging. The role of antioxidants is to neutralize free radicals and so avert the theft of cellular electrons, preventing harm to cell integrity.

For a more in depth response, continue reading or see “Healthy Living – Free Radicals

A “free radical”, (ROS reactive oxygen species or oxidant) exists with one or more unpaired electrons in orbit around an atom or molecule making it unstable, highly reactive and energized to seek an electron from another source. Targets of free radicals include cell membranes which can then be damaged by losing an electron to the radical species.

Other factors provoking free radical formation include pro-oxidative enzymes, pollutants, lipid oxidation, injury and inflammation, smoke and irradiation.

Oxidative stress is the adverse effect of ROS on cell integrity and consequently on numerous physiological functions in cells.

Phenolic-rich berries and berry powders, like Berry Wise™ can help protect cells from oxidative damage by supplying a diversity of antioxidants that neutralize free radicals.

5) How is Berry Wise™ any better than the competition?

Berry Wise™ contains more antioxidant-rich berries, more essential nutrients, higher fiber and comparable ORAC per serving. We also believe our product has superior taste which is highly valued by consumers as indicated in research. Combine this with the simplicity of “Nutrition You Know™” and we believe that we have a winner.

6) How many servings of fruit a day does one serving of Berry Wise™ deliver?

References to servings of fruit can be manipulated. A single serving of our product is the berry equivalent to a serving of fruit or ½ Cup of blueberries. A bottle of Berry Wise™ provides the fruit equivalent to 15 Cups of blueberries. However, ORAC of 3000 can be positioned as the equivalent of 10 servings of fruit if one uses a low ORAC fruit as the basis for the statement. In addition, the vitamins and minerals in Berry Wise™ provide added nutritional value beyond the “servings of fruit”.

7) What do you mean by “ORAC Rich”?

Neither the Canadian nor U.S. governments have established Recommended Daily Intake values (RDIs) for ORAC. Literature notes 5000 and sometimes 4000 to 7000 as the equivalent daily amount associated with the recommended 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables.

The ORAC assay (test-tube test) has inherent variability in it. i.e., the same sample analyzed at different times or by different labs may yield different results. We use Brunswick Labs for our testing as we believe them to be the most respected and advanced resource. Until we are more confident in consistent measures, we are not prepared to make a specific numerical claim although our target is a minimum of 3000. We know that we provide very good antioxidant capacity and therefore are confident placing our ORAC symbol on our products.

8) Does the nutritional value of Berry Wise™ break down when heated?

Heat or processing of any kind (even long-term storage) will reduce the antioxidant quality of phenolics in ways not possible to predict, as they number in the dozens per berry and vary phenolic by phenolic.

Lipid-soluble pigments like carotenoids (lycopene from tomatoes or beta-carotene in wolfberries as examples) may actually be liberated from skin during heating, so are different.

Baking (breads, muffins from scratch) is an exception, really, to the uses proposed for foods in our brochure and on our website. Most are "sprinkle" applications for taste + nutrition, an easier use and one more consistent with our overall theme of "natural and easy to understand and use". Even if put into the mix for baking, our powder would still add nutrients.

Note that we have added vitamins, minerals and fiber to our products thus ensuring that there is added nutritional value to our products beyond the inherent berry-based nutrients.

9) Could the 9g of Carbohydrate not be considered ‘low-carb’ and was that part of the marketing/formulation?

The reference to “low-carb” is for meal replacement products. By virtue of our formula content, serving frequency and serving size, it is not relevant to our product – as a supplement – that carbohydrate content be specified to the DV.

10) Is this good for Diabetics?

While we don’t advocate “promoting” these products as “good for diabetics” they are suitable additions to a diabetic’s diet in the context of a well managed overall diet. So, yes, diabetics and everyone in need of a broad-based nutritional supplement can safely consume our products. We prefer not to associate diseases with specific benefits that may occur from using our product, as there is no accepted scientific proof that this effect exists. Common sense dictates that regular use of a supplement like ours would generally support health. (A single serving represents 1½ exchanges for a diabetic.)

11) Why did you not use .mcg instead of .ug?

“µg” is the proper scientific designation for micrograms. The labeling guidelines (for food), use µg even though “mcg” for microgram is currently more easily understood by consumers. We are following the proper guidelines and believe that consumers will soon catch up.

12) Why the note on your labels regarding children under the age of 12?

The product is suitable for and can be marketed to everyone. We discuss baby boomers as the primary audience based on this group's affinity for wellness. The reference to “under 12” is primarily due to space restrictions and the need to outline separate serving sizes and therefore nutritional information for this age group.

13) Are there pesticides in your products?

We follow strict guidelines in terms of high quality ingredients. We test our products using expert labs for ORAC value, nutritional content and pesticides and are confident that Berry Wise™ is very high quality in every regard. None of the tests conducted on our products has indicated any issues regarding pesticides; in fact, the presence of minute traces fall well below all government specifications and typically yield “non-detectible” results.

14) What other products do you plan to introduce?

We believe that the simplicity of a well-understood berry platform and “Nutrition You Know™” plus the science behind our products will create a solid foundation for the Berry Wise™ brand. The mantra of “Live Life. Age Well.™” personifies our desire to create natural and simple berry-based pathways of wellness. The future for Berry Wise™ will include product development in areas that will support specific body functions of greatest concern to our primary audience. You can help to guide us by sharing your feedback in the Survey section of this website.
