Free Radical Types

There are 6 primary ROS or “free radicals”:

  1. Water-soluble peroxyl radical
  2. Lipid-soluble peroxyl radical
  3. Hydroxyl radical
  4. Hydrogen peroxide
  5. Singlet Oxygen
  6. Superoxide anion

and 3 nitrogen radicals

  1. Peroxynitrite
  2. Nitric oxide
  3. Nitric dioxide

* although a radical species, nitric oxide, NO, is now known as the “universal vascular relaxing factor” that controls blood vessel tone (and therefore blood pressure) throughout the body. It also has multiple, diverse roles beneficial to every cell, including transmitter functions in the brain and nerves and immune-regulating properties. The 1998 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine was awarded for revealing the diverse physiological properties of nitric oxide.
