Implications for Reducing Risk of Diseases

Berry nutrients and phytochemicals have been associated with such a diversity of positive health benefits that it’s hard to exclude any possibility for long-term health if we were to have them in our diets over a lifetime.

However, some caution in interpreting these studies is in order. It’s not that anything untoward has been revealed – quite the contrary – but regulatory agencies guarding policies on drugs, foods and label information require stringent proof before health claims can be made for nutrients and foods in general. In the USA, it’s the FDA that performs this role, and in Canada, Health Canada and the Natural Health Products Directorate (see References).

Very few claims are, in fact, allowed. This case exists only because human population studies on food ingredients are extremely difficult to control sufficiently to allow precise “in-human” research and conclusions about the health effects of one nutrient.

In all the allowed claims, however, a broad statement we’ve all been hearing is permitted: consuming a variety of whole foods – vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts – assures good nutrient intake. Combine such wise food choices with increased amounts of physical activity and sports participation and you’re on a positive path to healthy living.

We believe in these potential benefits at Berry Wise™ and want to encourage everyone to act. Our References include FDA and Health Canada advisory links as well as numerous others for improving our lifestyles.

Several preliminary berry research studies point the way toward lowered disease risk and long-term health benefits. Dark berries hold the key of abundant levels of mixed phenolics and carotenoids – the powerful antioxidants mentioned above, plus are the blueprint of good overall nutrition that led Berry Wise™ into business!

Here are a few disease conditions thought to be alleviated by a berry-rich diet:

These are just a few of the trends appearing in medical and nutritional research journals that propose what we’ve been hearing for years – berries and other colorful fruits and vegetables can build resistance to diseases, and may eventually be shown to substantially lower risk or prevent diseases.

At Berry Wise™, every snippet of science on berries attracts us like bees to a strawberry flower.

We’ll be watching this research unfold month by month over coming years, and will share some of the breakthroughs with you right here!
